This is not just another petition! It’s probably one of the single most important petitions in recent history and it is open for signing by any person living in the European Union!
In 2018, Forward as One’s convener drafted and submitted a petition to the European Parliament calling on the parliament to call a vote to Support Scotland being allowed to renegotiate to stay in the European Union should it vote to leave the UK before the end of Brexit under Article 48 of the Lisbon Treaty.
In a nutshell, the vote calls on the EU to support Scotland remaining, not having to re-apply for membership.
The European Parliament at the time declined to move forward as the Brexit negotiations were in full swing. But in a game-changing move for the future prospects of Scotland, the petition has now been formally approved and opened for signing by any European Union citizen, regardless of where they are from.
In response to the petition being approved convener of Forward as One, Martin Keatings said:
“This has been a long road in getting the petition approved but now that it finally has, it’s time to put the myth perpetuated by the UK Government, that Scotland would have to join a mythical queue and re-join the EU,to bed once and for all!”
“Every person in Scotland, indeed every person in Europe now has the opportunity to ask their MEPs to support Scotland being allowed to remain in the EU if we vote for Independence before the conclusion of the Brexit negotiations. We voted to remain, independence gives us that option, we only need our friends in the EU to back our desire to remain part of the European Union family!”
The process is a little complicated but we highly suggest you take the time to add your support.
In order to do it you must do two things. The first thing is to set up an account for yourself on the EuroParl website.
Step One: Setup Account:
You can do this by clicking here: https://petiport.secure.europarl.europa.eu/petitions/en/registration/register#registerFrm
- Important – You may have to click a confirmation link sent to your email to confirm your identity.
Now! Point to note, when you sign up, it is going to ask you to declare your nationality and unfortunately the UK being the signatory to the EU treaties, that nationality is going to have to come under “United Kingdom” and “British” but think of it as one of the last times you are going to have to do it. Please don’t let that declaration dull your resolve to sign because this is extremely important.
Step Two: Support the petition clicking the link “Click to Support” below.
Once you have set up your account, you can then click the following link and click “Support Petition”. Click here to support: Click to Support
Once you have added your support you will receive a confirmation email.
This is your opportunity to have the European Parliament actually take a more formal stance on Scotlands membership of the EU if it votes for Independence, once and for all, ending the Unionists claim it would have to re-apply.
